Maine Atlantic Salmon Stocking Database is Developed
Northeast Region, April 28, 2006
Print Friendly Version

In the late 1990's the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (Service), the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission (MASC) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) began developing  a database system incorporating data from various management activities.  These activities include habitat surveys, juvenile population assessment, spawning and broodstock management, smolt and adult migration monitoring, redd counts, and obstruction removal. Most of the databases were developed independently from each other under the auspices of the lead agency for each activity. The Service's Maine Fishery Resource Office was tasked with development of a stocking database.

In 2005 Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery assumed the responsibility for developing the stocking database. The database was designed with the following three core elements:

TRIP INFORMATION : Date, duration of trip, crew leader/driver, rearing entry

FISH INFORMATION: Lifestage, size range(fish/lb), marks/tag applied, genetic group, total number of fish per trip, losses

STOCKING LOCATION INFORMATION: Drainage, tributary, stocking location(known site or UTM coordinates), number of fish released at each location.

The database was built in Mircosoft Access using a shared information "hub" with other databases developed by the Service, MASC and NMFS. The database was developed in such a manner to ensure that data would flow between other databases, primarily those related to juvenile population assessments. This level of exchange was accomplished through close coordination with personnel from MASC and NMFS.

The database incorporates stocking data generated by two federal hatcheries, Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery and Green Lake National Fish Hatchery, as well as numerous private hatcheries and non-government organizations such as:Wild Salmon Resource Center, Saco River Salmon Club, Pine Tree Trout Farm, University of Maine, Maine State Fish Culture Stations, Aquaculture facilities, Dug Brook Hatchery/Atlantic Salmon for Northern Maine, St. Croix International Waterway, USDA National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center, over 130 Fish Friends and Salmon in Schools and Trout Unlimited.
