Midwest Region, August 17, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Kristen Dziubinski, La Crosse Fish Health Center, and Patricia Polzin, La Crosse Fisheries Office, traveled to the Genoa National Fish Hatchery, Wisconsin, to tag lake sturgeon, August 17.They were joined by a student worker from Trempealeau Refuge who helped with tagging.

A stainless steel, coded wire tag was placed between the first two scutes on the dorsal side of the fish.

About 2,000 hatchery fish were tagged on August 17, bringing the total tagged at the hatchery to about 13,000.

The tagging helps biologists at Genoa track sturgeon after release into the wild. Lake sturgeon are on the endangered list for the state of Wisconsin.
