River Partners Plan for Fish Passage at Mississippi River Lock and Dam 22
Midwest Region, August 15, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Working with the Corps of Engineers, Illinois DNR, and Missouri DOC,  the Rock Island Field Office has provided technical assistance  in the planning and design of a fish passage structure to be constructed through Mississippi River Lock and Dam 22 near Hannibal, Missouri.

Biolgists strive to design a low maintenance, natural rock riffle that will allow fish to bypass the dam's locks and gates.

This is a high priority project under the Corps of Engineers Navigation and Environemtal Sustainability Program (NESP) which is awaiting authroization in the 2006 WRDA.

The Carterville FRO is conducting pre-project fish monitoring at the location which will also help in project design.  RIFO biologists have also assisted the FRO in its sampling.

Construction is not expected before 2008.
