Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Waterfowl Partnership

A partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge is providing big dividends for migrating waterfowl. The waterfowl partnership provides for two distinct management programs.

 The first program provides for winter wheat seed. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation donated 2,500 bushel of wheat to Tishomingo NWR to plant 1,000 acres of refuge wheat fields. The ODWC also provides for a Wildlife Technician to assist Tishomingo NWR with planting. The program saves the refuge $17,500 annually.

The second program is the aerial millet program where the ODWC planted 1,200 acres of Japanese Millet on the mudflats of Tishomingo NWR and adjacent management areas.  The program cost the ODWC $16,500 annually. The millet program, during this drought year, will provide an invaluable crop for migrating waterfowl this fall.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Waterfowl Partnership with Tishomingo NWR provides $34,000 annually to provide for migrating waterfowl. The partnership is a testimony to the dedication of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation to work “hand in hand” to provide for the resource.
