Louisiana Pine Snake Conservation Partners Meet
Southwest Region, August 1, 2006
Print Friendly Version
On August 1-2, 2006, approximately 60 Federal, State, and Private partners assembled at the College of Forestry and Agriculture on the Campus of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, for the 4th Annual Louisiana Pine Snake (LPS) meeting.  The meeting, based on the foundation established by a 2004 Candidate Conservation Agreement (CCA), was hosted by the U.S. Forest Service with support from the Service’s East Texas Sub-office and Lafayette, LA Ecological Services Field Office.    Discussions included LPS listing status, the status of the species in Texas and Louisiana, general habitat requirements, research and monitoring, and captive breeding opportunities.  The LPS CCA provides the framework for the development of a comprehensive plan and strategy with the goal of achieving conservation results sufficient to preclude the need to list the LPS.  Specific goals, objectives, and strategies will be established for future ecosystem conservation, habitat management, monitoring and trapping, captive breeding, research, and integration of public and private-land conservation efforts.
