TETLIN:Highway Travelers Greeted by Refuge Interpretation
Alaska Region, September 1, 2006
Print Friendly Version
"Feathered Travelers" is about the migrant and resident birds of Tetlin Refuge and the purpose of our fall migration banding program.
"Welcome to the Tetlin Passage" tells of the travelers both past and present along this natural migration corridor as well as those who choose to stay.

The first visitors to experience these panels actually waited for them to be mounted. Very impressed, they exclaimed "Tell them the Germans were the first!"

Tetlin Refuge is pleased to present a new set of twelve interpretive panels along the first 65 miles of the Alaska-Canada Highway which parallels the Refuge boundary. After crossing the border, Feathered Travelers greets visitors against the backdrop of a beautiful lake. Five miles up the highway at the refuge visitor center are the next two panels. Welcome to the Tetlin Passage is the imaginative depiction of past and present migrants through the valley and speaks to the significance of this area. Where is the Wildlife offers helpful hints for the most frequently asked visitor question. Further up the highway and at the end of the recently renovated Hidden Lake Trail, is Welcome to Beaver Habitat which explains the habits of beaver in this area where their activity is very evident. At four additional scenic highway pullouts, panels discuss the boreal forest and the role of fire, glacial rivers of the Refuge, traditional activities and Refuge studies on whitefish, local geology, impact of insects, caribou, and how to survive Interior Alaska’s winters. Artist Ram Papish’s exquisite watercolor illustrations are complimented by lively text written by Elaine Rhode. These high density phenolic panels were produced by Fossil Industries. We hope the new panels will provide years of enjoyment for those who travel the Alaska Highway.
