First Successful Loon Nest at Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, July 26, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Refuge intern Angela Flanagin, recorded the first successful hatching of loons on Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in Maine.  The adult loons were seen with two young on the morning of July 26 at East Loring Lake. Loons have been observed using the lake since the refuge was established in 1998, but no young have ever been recorded.  The lake was created by the Air Force and was stocked yearly with brook trout for recreational use by the airmen stationed there for many years.  The success of the loons this year is a great indication that the old base is slowing reverting back into wildlife habitat.
