Reduced Flows in Pinto Creek, Habitat for Devils River Minnow
Southwest Region, July 20, 2006
Print Friendly Version

In cooperation with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and private landowners, Austin Ecological Services Office staff attended a site visit on July 20 to Pinto Creek, one of only three known locations in the U.S. of the threatened Devils River minnow.  Spring flows that support the creek were found to be reduced, providing only intermittent aquatic habitat available for the minnow.   That evening, Robert Pine made a presentation at a special meeting of the Kinney County Groundwater Conservation District to express our concerns about loss of habitat for the fish and to offer our assistance in conservation of spring flows.
