Journal Entry   Back Private Lands Agreement Will Remove Non-Native Vegetation in the Riparian Zone and Restore Wetlands Along the Rio Grande on Tribal Lands in New Mexico Southwest Region, July 26, 2006 Print Friendly Version The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program in New Mexico funded habitat restoration work on tribal lands along the Rio Grande approximately 2 miles north of Espanola, New Mexico.  The project site is a gravel point bar and adjacent former river channel along the Rio Grande.  Most of the non-native Russian olive and tamarisk have been removed from the site through other funding sources.  The remainder of non-native vegetative species will be removed and re-sprouts will be treated.  A wetland will be restored through excavation of a high flow channel to the Rio Grande maximizing the wetland area.  Following excavation, native wetland species will be planted.  The excavation should provide favorable conditions for natural cottonwood seedling recruitment.  The site is near occupied southwestern willow flycatcher (an endangered species) and yellow-billed cuckoo (a candidate species) habitat.
