YCC Summer Program
Southwest Region, August 7, 2006
Print Friendly Version

The 2006 YCC program ended on July 28th.  This summer 4 enrollees and 1 group leader were able to complete 2 large projects along with numerous standard activities.  A large and complex path of steps was constructed in an eroded gully which leads down to a popular fishing spot on Sally Jones Lake.  The crew constructed retaining walls from 5" x 5" treated timbers that formed a series of steps and landings down to the lake shore.  This will enhance visitor safety and stop the erosion of this popular spot.  A deck and rail fishing platform was also constructed along the main lake shore at Sandtown Woods parking lot.  This accessible platform upgrades this popular catfishing spot and allows easy access to the water's edge for people with limited mobility.

The YCC crew also assisted Ozark Plateau NWR with the maintenance of the historic Looney cabin and the removal of a roadside dump in the Sally Bull Hollow area of that refuge.
