Refuge Acquires Gillum Tract
Southwest Region, July 25, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The refuge acquired fee title to the 70-acre Gillum tract on July 25.  This project was a joint effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Apache Corporation, and NatureWorks Incorporated.  NatureWorks is a non-profit organization based out of Tulsa, OK that raises money for conservation efforts in Oklahoma.   Apache is an oil production company interested in conservation projects.   The Gillum family had cleared this area of bottomland hardwoods in the early 1970’s for cattle production and the area had little wildlife value.  NatureWorks used proceeds from their annual wildlife art show held in Tulsa to purchase the tract from the Gillum family last October.  NatureWorks and Apache then entered into an agreement with the Service to restore the area through the Partners for Wildlife Program.  Apache purchased containerized native hardwoods that were planted on 30 acres of the tract this past spring.  The remainder of the area will be restored to an actively managed moist soils area complete with a levee and a water control structure.  The Service reimbursed NatureWorks for half of the purchase price at the closing.
