Journal Entry   Back WILDLIFE CORRIDOR CHALLENGES IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY Southwest Region, July 11, 2006 Print Friendly Version A meeting was held at the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge to discuss the wildlife corridor challenges for ocelots and other wildlife and to reassess wildlife corridor connections.  The group included the South Texas Refuge Complex Project Leader and staff, Texas Ecological Services State Director, Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Supervisor, CCESFO Alamo Suboffice biologists, the Nature Conservancy of Texas and Environmental Defense.  Some of the topics discussed were habitat quality and availability, corridors connected to larger habitat patches, and the Comprehensive Conservation Plans being developed for the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.  Threats to the wildlife corridors were discussed including development around wildlife corridors, urban expansion, less acquisition funding, higher land values than fair market value, conservation easements and its related cost and management, landowner incentives, GIS maps, alternative corridors, road impacts and needs for proper wildlife crossings.            Contact Info: Martin Valdez, 505-248-6599, martin_valdez@fws.gov Send to: From: Notes: ..........................................................................................
