Journal Entry   Back Arlington Field Office assists Corps of Engineers on Endangered Species Habitat Impacts Southwest Region, July 12, 2006 Print Friendly Version On July 12, 2006, Arlington Field Office staff met with representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Whitney Lake, Texas, to participate in an assessment of habitat destruction of government-owned land from an apparent illegal trespass.   The impacts were discovered during a survey of suitable habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler as part of a cooperative effort between the Service and the Corps’ Whitney Lake Office to evaluate the federal property for recovery purposes.  An unauthorized gravel road was constructed from private property across Corps’ land to the Brazos River for the purpose of allowing maintenance access to a planned pump and pipeline to supply water for gas extraction.  A 1998 survey commissioned by the Corps revealed the presence of numerous golden-cheeked warblers within the vicinity of this disturbance, and approximately one-third of the roadway appeared to be in typical warbler nesting habitat.  In addition, the adverse impacts of numerous stream crossings were observed during the assessment.  Service staff have provided technical assistance to the Corps’ Whitney Lake Office on the extent of the impacts and suggested appropriate restoration measures to the Corps.   Contact Info: Martin Valdez, 505-248-6599, martin_valdez@fws.gov Send to: From: Notes: ..........................................................................................
