The Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex recently completed several trail enhancements at the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. Workers from Burkel Construction, of Pulaski, Wisconsin, along with oversight from refuge maintenance staff performed several activities throughout May 2006.  Work consisted of sealing cracks in the Charlietown Trail and refuge parking lots; providing a level and firm surface to allow visitors universal access along the refuge’s scenic Grassy Point Trail; and restoring and painting a runway remnant in order to preserve a small portion of the site’s history as the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Landing Field.   The project served to improve the quality of the visitor experience and to preserve the long-term integrity of the public-use facilities.
