TETLIN: Kids and Parents Hooked on Fishing
Alaska Region, June 24, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Forty-five intrepid fisher men and women set off from the Tetlin Refuge headquarters near Tok the last Saturday in June for an hour ride to the Refuge’s Deadman Lake for an afternoon filled with fishing and fun activities.  Partnering up with the local school's after-school program (GAP), the Refuge sponsored this fishing day for kids and their parents.  Fly tying, fish print bandanas, casting contests, invertebrate studies and fishing from motor boats, canoes, and the lakeshore rounded out the day. GAP provided a delicious burger lunch.

This activity provided an opportunity for parents to get out with their kids on to the Refuge; many local families have never been to the Refuge's campground/day use facility.  The young people (and their parents) learned about the fish in the area, what they eat, where to find them and how to catch them.

This activity was part of the national "All American Kid's Fishing Day" program.
