Journal Entry   Back Mexican Wolf Recovery Program Lethally Controls the Nantac Pack Alpha Male in New Mexico Southwest Region, June 18, 2006 Print Friendly Version Since their April 25 translocation, the Nantac wolf pack moved approximately 20 miles north of its release site, localizing just north of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness in New Mexico.  On June 17, following three confirmed depredation incidents, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a permanent removal order for the Nantac Pack, per Standard Operating Protocol 13.0.  On June 18, the Interagency Field Team (IFT) confirmed that the Nantac pack was involved in a fourth depredation incident.  IFT personnel lethally removed alpha male 993 later that day.  During the last week of June, alpha female moved south 20 miles and the IFT located it on the June 27 aerial telemetry flight near the Nantac pack’s translocation site on the eastern edge of the Gila National Forest.  Removal efforts continue for the alpha female.  The Mexican gray wolf was listed as endangered in 1976.
