Mt. Graham Red Squirrel Spring 2006 Count
Southwest Region, June 26, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The Arizona Game and Fish Department and the USDA Forest Service announced the Spring 2006 midden count  results June 26, 2006.  Biologists estimate a range of 199 (plus or minus 15) Mt. Graham red squirrels currently occupy the Pinaleno Mountain range (Mt. Graham).  This is slightly less than the Spring 2005 results of 214 (plus or minus 12) red squirrels.  Midden surveys are conducted every spring and fall (since 1991) and used in a formula that calculates approximate red squirrel population numbers.  While these numbers fluctuate, and a small, isolated population can be very vulnerable to extinction, a small population can also rebound under favorable conditions.  Loss of habitat to drought, insects, and fires has likely been the reasons for population reductions, but biologists remain optimistic for recovery of the species.
