Journal Entry   Back Private Lands Agreement Executed to Fence an Upland and Riparian Area along Walnut Creek on Private Lands in Southwestern New Mexico Southwest Region, May 22, 2006 Print Friendly Version The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program in New Mexico funded habitat restoration work on private lands along Walnut Creek, a tributary to the Gila River, approximately 10 miles northwest of Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico.  The project involves the construction of approximately 4,848 linear feet of fence to exclude livestock access to 54 acres of private lands from the adjacent U.S. Forest Service grazing allotment that surrounds the property.  Selective juniper removal will occur on approximately 2.0 acres of the property to control their encroachment into the grasslands.  Protecting the area from unmanaged grazing, and removing invasive juniper in the grassland will provide improved foraging, resting and breeding areas for migratory birds and numerous other resident wildlife species such as large and small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and will improve water quality, riparian vegetation establishment and growth, and reduce stream bank erosion.
