ANCHORAGE: New “Fire’s Natural Role in Alaska” Poster Available
Alaska Region, June 2, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Fire poster is now available.
Fire poster is now available.

There’s a new cheerful poster being distributed around Alaska.  The poster provides a simple message about the ecological role of fire in boreal forests.  The message focuses on fire’s role as an agent of change that starts the successional sequence in our forests.  It also describes how different ages of forests provide habitat for different species of wildlife.  The artist, Kathy Sarns, is a long-time Alaskan residing in Anchorage.  She is the same artist who created the artwork for the “Role of Fire in Alaska” K-12 curriculum.  Kathy does a wonderful job of illustrating ecological concepts like plant succession, niche habitats and the role of fire in a pleasing and informative manner.  The Service is distributing over 6,000 of these posters throughout Alaska.  Initial distribution included all of the National Wildlife Refuge System offices and visitor centers in Alaska, as well as to interagency collaborators such as Alaska Fire Service (BLM), National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service and to the State of Alaska.  For more information or to request copies, contact Karen Murphy at 907-786-3501.
