San Andres NWR concludes Oryx Population Reduction Hunts for the spring

San Andres NWR concluded Oryx population reduction hunts on the refuge for the 2005-2006 season.  Hunts began in November, 2005 and continued through the winter into spring and concluded on April 20, 2006 for the season.   Additional hunts will begin again in November, 2006 to further reduce the population of oryx on the refuge. A total of 43 oryx were removed from the refuge this hunt cycle.  43 of 44 hunters were successful in harvesting an oryx and the largest horned bull oryx taken on the refuge since oryx hunting began was killed in April .  The bull had horns that were 38 inches long on the right side and 39 inches long on the left.  22 cow oryx were harvested and 21 bull oryx.  To date, 265 oryx have been harvested from the refuge since depredation hunts began in the year 2000.
