Southwest Region, May 2, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The Refuge hosted it's annual Kids Fishing Clinic on May 2, 2006 in celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week. Fifth graders from six area schools were in attendance with a total of 311 students and 41 teachers/parents. Using the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge Systems mission as it relates to the protection of wildlife. This hands-on environmental education experience encourages an interest in fishing and promotes future participation. Conservation ethics, fishing responsibility, boating safety, fules/regulations and basic fishing skills were the key elements for the day. Students had the opportunity to learn the rules and regulations of fishing, casting techniques, fashion t-shirts, create fish prints and learn the barriers of migration. Students were able to touch real freshwater/saltwater fish specimens while learning techniques to aid in fish identification. Students learned about the types of fishing gear available and the proper way to cast before fishing in two large freshwater tanks that had been stocked with hungry catfish for the day. Many volunteers helped to insure the day was a success. Partners that aided in the day's success were Friends of Arnsas and Matagorda Island, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery, Pure Fishing, Austwell-Tivoli ISD, Texas Master Naturalists, Texas Maritime Museum of Rockport, Austwell-Tivoli Lions Club, and Wal-Mart Corporate.
