On April 11 and 12, the Fish and Wildlife Service, in cooperation with the University of New Mexico, held the Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Collaborative Program's First Annual Symposium.  The goal of the symposium was to increase the volume and value of communication among the Program signatories, those who have been funded by the Program, and those associated with the Program. The purpose is to begin, on an annual basis, to collect and share what has been learned using Program funds, either through research or on-the-ground projects, thereby enhancing the quality and impact of future work. The Program addresses the geographic area from the Rio Grande headwaters, downstream to Elephant Butte Reservoir.  The symposium featured talks and posters on the biology and ecology of the Rio Grande silvery minnow, the distribution and abundance of the Southwestern willow flycatcher, habitat restoration research and monitoring, water quality and riparian ecology, and investigations into options for irrigation and other water use efficiencies. Approximately 100 participants were in attendance.  Staff that participated from the Fish and Wildlife Service included the New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, and New Mexico Fishery Resources Office.
