Journal Entry   Back New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office meets with the Pecos RiverCommission Southwest Region, April 19, 2006 Print Friendly Version The New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office (Field Office) met with the Engineers Advisors for the Pecos River Commission on April 5 in Santa Fe, New Mexico and with the Commissioners in Fort Stockton, Texas on April 19.  The meetings were requested by the Pecos River Commission to inform them about Fish and Wildlife Service activities in calendar year 2005 and current activities.  The Field Office produced a report of 2005 activities and presented relevant portions of the report to the Pecos River Commission.  The presentation at the annual meeting in Fort Stockton, Texas included information on:  recent listing of 4 invertebrates with critical habitat; recovery plan for the threatened Pecos sunflower; an investigation of a wetland on Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge; issues with discharges to water bodies from confined animal feeding operations; the status of the interior least tern along the Pecos River; and status of the Pecos bluntnose shiner (presented by New Mexico Fishery Resources Office).  The biological opinion process, a requirement of the Endangered Species Act, was discussed for the Bureau of Reclamation water operations in the Pecos River, for short-term operations (summer of 2006) and long-term operations (10 year period) with emphasis upon the threatened Pecos bluntnose shiner and interior least tern.
