Journal Entry   Back IZEMBEK:Volcano Shows Off for the First Ferry Tourists of the Year Alaska Region, April 24, 2006 Print Friendly Version The first Izembek Refuge bus tour of the season took place on April 21 with 14 passengers of the Alaska Ferry System boat the M/V Tustumena participating.  It was a clear beautiful day with calm winds and a 360 view of the mountains and volcanoes.  Visitors were excited to see the Natural Landmark Shishaldin Volcano on Unimak Island with a plume of smoke at the top. Several foxes were seen cavorting on the way to Grant Point. Brant were scattered in the smooth as glass Izembek Lagoon. Also seen were several eagles and ducks.  One of the passengers mentioned that she had been involved with the development of the wilderness proposal for Izembek in the 70’s and was a friend of the previous refuge manager Robert ‘Sea Otter’ Jones. This year the number of Tustumena visits to Cold Bay will increase to two dockings per month through October.
