American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Gulf of Mexico Workshop
Southwest Region, March 16, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) held, in Corpus Christi, Texas, the 3rd of 4 regional workshops designed to look at the impacts of coastal engineering projects on birds.  This workshop was geared toward enhancing the USACE’s awareness of the conservation status of bird species of concern, both listed and otherwise, on the Gulf Coast and how coastal engineering projects interact with habitat needs of birds during all parts of their life cycles.  The workshop included sessions on maximizing the value of bird habitats through engineering design considerations.  The use of regional, advance planning strategies was emphasized including dovetailing with the regional sediment management planning process being instituted by USACE districts.  Several staff from the Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office attending the workshop, made presentations or facilitated sessions.  The desired results from this workshop included:  1) facilitating natural resource agencies; and conservation groups’ influence on current USACE projects and future actions by the USACE so that those actions are more beneficial for high priority bird species; 2) development and promotion of a laundry list of bird habitat projects that the USACE should take into consideration during project planning, and 3) development of monitoring programs.
