Border 2012 Gulf Task Force Meeting

The Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office -Alamo Suboffice staff attended a binational meeting sponsored by Environmental Protection Agency and Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Mexican Secretariat of Health (SS) and other federal agencies, The purpose of the meeting was to address environmental and public’s health issues in the U.S.-Mexico border region.  Representatives of the City of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico City and other community leaders addressed issues and needs for their communities.  Sessions addressed water issues, emergency response and pollution, prevention/compliance assistance, waste issues, and air issues.  Each work session discussed accomplishments, significant issues on the U.S. and Mexican side of the border, remaining gaps in knowledge, possible solutions and potential projects.  Several recommendations were selected for further consideration from each work session.  There were 55 participants including those mentioned above and representatives from U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission, Congressman Solomon Ortiz’s office, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the Mayor from the City of Brownsville, Environmental Defense, Frontera Audubon, State of Tamaulipas Natural Resource Division, the Mayor of Matamoros, the Border Environmental Cooperation Commission and the North American Development Bank.
