Students enjoy a winter wildlife field trip at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge
Students enjoy a winter wildlife field trip at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

Spring is arriving at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge with longer and warmer days, melting snow, and the air beginning to fill with bird songs.  Winter, however, proved to be a busy and productive season for the Refuge's Environmental Education Program.  Approximately 540 students from local schools participated in “Wildlife in Winter” or other Winter Ecology Programs.  Students learned how wildlife survives long and cold Alaska winters, how to find and interpret signs left by wildlife, and other fun facts about local wildlife and wildlife ecology.  Each program includes a pre-trip orientation to the Refuge's Environmental Education Classroom followed by an outdoor field trip at a later date.
