North American Wetland Conservation Act Funds 15 Proposals in Midwest
Midwest Region, March 14, 2006
Print Friendly Version

On March 14, 2006, the North American Wetlands Conservation Council approved 15 projects, totaling over $680,000 under the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA).  The NAWCA Grants Program requires, at a minimum, the grant amount to be matched with non-federal contributions.  This is typically accomplished by partners from state, tribal and other non-governmental organizations.  The combined non-federal partner contribution for this effort was over $1,484,000.

Twelve of these projects are in the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture and three projects are in the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture.  These projects are distributed across six states and will result in the protection, restoration and enhancement of 3,213 acres of wetland and wetland associated upland habitat.

All of these projects will benefit priority migratory birds and other wetland associated wildlife species.  All of these actions will advance the goals identified in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture Implementation Plan, Partners in Flight, and the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan.
