Iowa/ Nebraska Partnership Receives $1 Million NAWCA Grant
Midwest Region, March 8, 2006
Print Friendly Version
On March 8, 2006, the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission approved a $1 million grant under the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA) for a project called Middle Missouri River (IA/NE), Phase II.  The NAWCA Grants Program requires, at a minimum, the grant amount be matched with non-federal contributions typically made by State, Tribal and other non-governmental partnerships.  The partners contributed $2,530,933 to this project.

This effort will focus on 18 counties of Nebraska and Iowa that border the Missouri River.  The protection, restoration, and enhancement of 6,222 acres of wetland and upland habitat within the Missouri River floodplain will compliment a previously successful NAWCA proposal in this corridor.  The Missouri River and its associated floodplain has been significantly altered and this habitat work will benefit migratory birds and other wildlife.

Ducks Unlimited, Inc. is the grantee and the other partners are the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resource District, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, Royce Gramm, Harrison County Conservation Board, Pheasants Forever, and Nemaha County Natural Resources District.

The project is in the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture. The proposal will advance the goals identified in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture Implementation Plan and the other major bird conservation initiative plans.
