West Wisconsin Land Trust and Partners Receive $1 Million NAWCA Grant
Midwest Region, March 8, 2006
Print Friendly Version
On March 8, 2006, the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission approved a $1 million grant under the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA) for a project called Lower Chippewa River Wetland Protection Partnership II.  The NAWCA Grants Program requires, at a minimum, the grant amount to be matched with non-federal contributions.  This is typically accomplished by partners from state, tribal and other non-governmental organizations.  The non-federal partners contributed $3,110,010 towards this effort.

This effort will build on a previously successful NAWCA project and will focus on seven counties in Wisconsin.  A total of 2,811 acres of wetlands and associated upland habitat will be protected by acquiring fee title and conservation easements.  In addition to the habitat being protected, 175 acres of weltand will be restored.  The grantee is West Wisconsin Land Trust and the partners are Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Pheasants Forever, Inc., Trout Unlimited, Chippewa County and some private landowners.

The project is in the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture. The acquisition and restoration of wildlife habitat will benefit priority migratory birds andadvance the goals identified in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture Implementation Plan, Partners in Flight, and the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan.
