Initiation of Refuge Spring Light Goose Hunt
Midwest Region, January 30, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge initiated a light goose hunt this spring during the Conservation Order.  The season began January 30 and will run to April 30.  The hunt was proposed in the Comprehensive Conservation Plan and was initiated this year, the first waterfowl hunt ever to occur on Squaw Creek.  The hunt was designed to increase the overall harvest of light geese in northwest Missouri and help reduce the number of light geese in the flyway that are having a detrimental affect on their nesting grounds in Hudson Bay, Canada.

Due to the lack of personnel to manage the hunt during the length of this season, the hunt was bid out to a professional guide service.  Therefore, the refuge would only deal with the guide rather and individual hunters and the guide would be responsible for obtaining interested goose hunters.  Two guides submitted bids and the successful bidder was the Louisiana Delta Hunting Club, Brandon, Mississippi.
