Pima County approves exchange of lands for Pima pineapple cactus conservation bank
Southwest Region, March 14, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved an exchange of lands that results in moving their Pima pineapple cactus conservation bank from its current location, allowing for the development of those lands by Diamond Ventures.  The new lands, located in Altar Valley (Madera Highlands parcel) and Green Valley (Elephant Head parcel) replace those lands that will be lost to development and will now serve as Pima County's conservation bank.  The new lands contain denser populations of the endangered Pima pineapple cactus than the original lands.  The Madera Highlands parcel is immediately to the north of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge.  Both parcels contribute to the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan preserve configuration.  The final processing of the exchange involves amendments to the conservation banking agreement and the conservation easement.
