ANCHORAGE: Refuge Staff Create a Spectacle at Science and Math Family Fun Night
Alaska Region, March 16, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Trailside Elementary School in Anchorage enjoyed a night of science with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bird Treatment and Learning Center, Service High Schoolers, and many other groups in early March.  The Fish and Wildlife Service was represented by Rachel McGill, Environmental Education Volunteer, and Steve Shuck, Chief of Realty Operations Branch, who shared marine mammals’ furs and skulls with over 100 people at the Service booth. Families were attracted to the booth by the spectacle of humongous walrus tusks, and then spent time examining the furs and skulls. The apprehension about “dead animals” faded away in the soft sea otter fur. Some of the children drew pictures of the skulls in wildlife journals. Several children announced they wanted to work with animals when they grew up. One boy announced he wanted to work with “dead, old bones (a paleontologist!)” Everyone had a fun science night!
