AESO participates in Altar Valley Fire Management Plan NEPA Scoping Meetings
Southwest Region, February 21, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Staff from the Tucson sub-office of the AESO participated in public scoping meetings for the Altar Valley Fire Management Plan.  The lead agency is Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the meetings were held in Arivaca and Tucson Arizona.  The Fire Management Plan is a cooperative effort to reestablish fire as part of the natural ecosystem in the 609,900-acre Altar Valley.  This plan is being developed through a partnership including the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance, Natural Resource Conservation Service, AESO, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Pima County Parks and Recreation Department, Bureau of Land Management, USDA Forest Service, and The Nature Conservancy.  This effort developed out of the Phase I Habitat Conservation Planning undertaken by the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance, AESO, and Arizona Game and Fish Department.  The area covered by this draft plan has populations of the endangered cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl, endangered Pima pineapple cactus, endangered masked bobwhite quail, candidate yellow-billed cuckoo, endangered Kearney blue star, threatened Mexican spotted-owl, and threatened Chiricahua leopard frog.
