Federal, State, and Private partners involved in Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) management and recovery in Texas gathered in Lufkin, Texas, on February 9, 2006, to report accomplishments and challenges in 2005, and discuss goals and opportunities for 2006 and beyond.  Representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Forest Service, Texas Committee on Natural Resources, Cook’s Branch Conservancy, and Temple-Inland reported that there were 330 active RCW clusters known in Texas in 2005.  This total includes 277 on Federal (Forest Service) lands, 16 on State lands, and 37 on private lands.   All parties are committed to manage RCW habitat and monitor results in accordance with the January 2003 Second Revision of the RCW Recovery Plan. On Forest Service lands in 2005, around 120,000 acres were burned, around 1,500 acres were mechanically treated, and around 1,400 were thinned to improve RCW habitat conditions.  On the private lands, 8,500 acres and 36 active RCW clusters and associated habitat are enrolled under private lands agreements with the Partners for Fish and Wildlife and/or Private Stewardship Grant program.
