KENAI: Environmental EducationGoes Home (School) at Refuge
Alaska Region, February 3, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has a Congressionally mandated purpose to provide environmental education and interpretation opportunities and has developed a program to include a variety of activities for school-age children, and adults.  Recently, however, the Refuge expanded its program to reach out to the hundreds of Kenai area youth who are home-schooled.  The first offering of "the Home-school Discovery Room" was successfully completed February 1 - 3, 2006 at the Refuge's Environmental Education Classroom located at its headquarters site in Soldotna.  Thirty-two families with nearly ninety children participated in the activities which included eight different stations.  Topics or activities included such things as bird watching, animal tracks, interactive wildlife games, and microscope use. The activities were very successful based on the rave reviews from parents and the noise level generated by the young folks having fun while learning about nature.
