New Mexico Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program Participatesat the Annual Quivera Coalition Conference in Albuquerque, January 14, 2006

The New Mexico Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program provided a booth display for the 5th Annual Quivira Coalition Conference held in Albuquerque, on January 13-14, 2006.  The booth provided an ideal opportunity to meet new private landowners, interact with current and former cooperators, and to market the Partners Program and the Private Stewardship Grant Program to conference attendees.  The purpose of the non-profit Quivira Coalition is to teach ranchers, environmentalists, public land managers, and other members of the public that ecologically healthy rangeland and economically robust ranches can be compatible.  Its mission is to foster ecological, economic, and social health on western landscapes through education, innovation, collaboration, and progressive public and private land stewardship.  Interest in the coalition continues to grow with a mailing list that exceeds 1,500 individuals and groups. 

The 2006 annual conference was the largest ever with over 500 individuals registered for the conference and/or workshops.  This year's theme was "Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide: Reconnecting People to the Land and Each Other."  As the conference grows, it continues to generate interest and support from various parties.  This year Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Representative Tom Udall (D-NM) provided taped addresses, Representative Heather Wilson (R-NM) and New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish gave opening comments, and Pat Lyon, Commissioner for the New Mexico Land Office, moderated one of the general sessions.
