As a dark column of smoke rose over Upper Pahranagat Lake, local folks wondered what was burning.  The Panaca Fire Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife staff and a fire crew from the Las Vegas Bureau of Land Management had gotten together to work for wildlife.  On January 12 the agencies conducted a prescribed fire to reduce the risk of wildland fire and create important habitat for nesting birds.  Approximately 40 acres of lake-side cattails and bulrush were burned.  Today thousands of nesting waterfowl can be seen resting and feeding in the area.  In remaining islands of bulrush, great blue herons and egrets hunt the shallow lake margins while raptors hunt from nearby cottonwood trees.  The agency fire crews were proud to have an opportunity to work for wildlife.
