Moosehorn and Aroostook NWRs participate in Wetland Policy Workshop
Northeast Region, December 8, 2005
Print Friendly Version

The Project Leader and Deputy of Moosehorn and Aroostook NWRs participated in a workshop on "Wetland Policy and Regulations Summary Panel Discussion on December the in Augusta, Maine.  The workshop was hosted by the chapter of the Wildlife Society and the Maine Association of Wetland Scientists Workshop.  The Army Corps of Engineers, EPA and state of Maine Officials reviewed the ecology and regulations that protect wetlands in Maine.  The general permit, special permits, culvert placement and significant Wildlife habitat buffers were discussed.  The state of Maine is drafting legislation similar to New Hampshire which establishes standard setbacks from vernal pools, waterfowl nesting areas and shorebird foraging areas.  The setbacks go from 350 feet to 750 feet depending on the priority resources protected by the areas.  A number of environmental consultants and regulatory people attended the meeting.
