Concerns Aired About Highway Widening Effects on Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, December 2, 2005
Print Friendly Version

Representatives of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency met with the Friends of Magurrewock recently to discuss concerns about the construction of a bridge in Calais and its impacts on the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge.  The Friends of Magurrewock maintain that the state is going to expand the current two lane highway into a four land highway, causing a negative impact on the refuge.  Moosehorn Project Leader Bill Kolodnicki, Maine Ecological Services Field Office Project Leader Gordon Russell and Wende Mahaney were asked to attend the meeting.  The state maintains that they do not have plans in the near future to widen the road and that is not part of this project.  The impact on bald eagles has been addressed by the Maine Field Office and the refuge has requested more information on the state's plan to assess secondary impacts to the refuge.  The Friends of Magurrework want the bridge built in Baileyville for economic reasons and maintain that this plan would avert damage to the refuge.

The Corps permit has not been granted to the State Department of Transportation and is in the public review process.
