Biological Opinion Completed for Dredging NearChain of Rocks, Mississippi River
Midwest Region, November 10, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Marion, Illinois, Ecological Services Office recently completed a Biological Opinion which analyzed the effects of proposed dredging activities near the Chain of Rocks area of the Mississippi River on the endangered pallid sturgeon.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposes to dredge approximately 925,650 cubic yards of sand to be used for berm construction on the Chain of Rocks North Canal Levee.  The proposed dredge area is located near a known sturgeon congregation area at the Chain of Rocks.  Additionally, pallid sturgeon are known to move through the area based on telemetry observations.  A total of four pallid sturgeon are anticipated to be incidentally taken as a result of entrainment by the dredge.  The Service determined that this was not likley to result in jeopardy to the species.  A monitoring plan is currently under development.
