Service participates in East Texas Black Bear Task Force Meeting
Southwest Region, December 14, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Federal, State, and Private partners assembled for the first meeting of the newly formed East Texas Black Bear Task Force. The task force will be carrying on the efforts of the East Texas Black Bear Working Group which has been working together over the last 3 years to develop the East Texas Black Bear Conservation and Management Plan, 2005-2015 (Texas Bear Plan).  The main focus of the meeting was to define the function and role of the task force in order to prioritize implementation of the goals and objectives of the 10-year Texas Bear Plan.  Currently, any black bear that occurs in Texas is protected by either State and/or Federal law, and confirmed sightings of black bears throughout Texas are on the rise and their interactions with the public is expected to increase in the future. It was determined the East Texas Black Bear Task Force will continue this partnership to implement the 10-year Texas Bear Plan.

The purpose of the Texas Bear Plan is to facilitate increased public coordination and communication, development and distribution of information and educational materials, habitat management, and research activities. Strategies to meet the objectives to accomplish the goals of the Texas Bear Plan strive to promote public awareness through outreach while providing public and private biologists and willing landowners with the technical knowledge to increase or enhance suitable habitat black bear throughout East Texas.
