Multi-agency Invertebrate Species of Concern List Prepared
Southwest Region, November 30, 2005
Print Friendly Version

Personnel from the New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office participated on an interagency team that developed a species of concern list for Region 2 of the Fish and Willdife Service.  Participating agencies include the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Department of Defense, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF), New Mexico Natural Heritage Program, and Arizona Department of Game and Fish.  Unique to this effort is the creation of the invertebrate portion which includes over 150 species.  The species were selected by consulting with specialists in agencies and academia, and through literature review.  The invertebrates are divided into 4 groups: clams, crustaceans, insects, and snails.  Information available on each species includes land jurisdiction where the species is found, limiting factors (threats), a description of the habitat where they are found, and management recommendations.  The number of invertebrates included is large because so many narrow endemics that occur in the arid Southwest.  To aid agency biologists, we worked with Natural Heritage and NMDGF to map all of the species.  A web site is being created where information for all the species will be available.
