Binational Rio Grande Summit
Southwest Region, November 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
A Binational Rio Grande Summit was held in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico and McAllen, Texas sponsored by the International Boundary and Water Commission, United States and Mexico (IBWC), jointly with the National Water Commission of Mexico.  In recognition of the interest of both governments in the sustainable development of the basin, the summit’s objective was to convene experts and water users in the Rio Grande basin, with the goal of identifying needs and obstacles for optimum development of the basin and its uses.  Interested parties provided information about sustainable management of the Rio Grande basin.  Representatives from federal, state, and local governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and water users were present.  The Corpus Christi/Alamo Ecological Services SubOffice Biologist (Ernesto Reyes) gave a presentation at the Summit on Biodiversity and the Binational efforts between the Service and Mexico.

During the Summit the following topics were addressed: legal and institutional aspects, basin management, the environment, water quality, infrastructure needs and financing.  Work groups were formed to discuss these topics and present concrete recommendations that will form the basis for preparation of a binational plan for the sustainable management of the basin for consideration by the two governments.
