Deep Fork Refuge Conducts Controlled Hunts During October
Southwest Region, October 31, 2005
Print Friendly Version

The refuge conducted three controlled deer hunts during the month of October, 2005.  October 7 – 9 was the only archery hunt.  October 14 – 16 was the youth primitive hunt, and October 28 – 30 was a deer primitive.   All hunt drawings were conducted through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s controlled hunt process.  Refuge staff conducted a pre-hunt briefing prior to each of the hunts.  Friends of the Deep Fork NWR provided a noon meal for the youth hunt that followed the briefing.  The total number of deer harvested on all three hunts was one of the highest ever recorded. Hunters harvested a total of 33 deer during the three hunts. Twelve were taken during the first hunt (archery), eight were taken during the youth primitive hunt, and the remaining thirteen were taken during the last primitive hunt.
