KENAI: Refuge Completes Fuel Break Projects
Alaska Region, October 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge fire staff finished an extraordinarily busy fire season with two fuels break projects:  one on Funny River Road, and the other at the end of Swan Lake Road.  The Funny River Road Project entailed removal of over 200 spruce bark beetle killed trees over a three mile section followed by burning 331 piles of slash.  Logs from the project were made available to the public for firewood.  A project on Swan Lake Road produced a 50-foot cleared area adjacent to a mile-long fence in the Moose Research Center and thinning around structures.  Both projects created defensible space in the wildland-urban interface from future fires, while the second project will also aid a prescribed fire planned for the area.
