Mini Wildlife Film Festival Captivates Anchorage Residents
Alaska Region, October 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
I went to an Anchorage City Assembly meeting and a film festival broke out.”  Assembly attendees and many others learned all about Alaska’s national wildlife refuges at a National Wildlife Refuge Week event taking place next door to the Assembly chambers.  Over 150 participants viewed displays, talked with Fish and Wildlife Service staff, helped themselves to Refuge System information, and enjoyed free refreshments provided by the Alaska Natural History Association.  Around 65 wildlife enthusiasts went on to attend the Mini Wildlife Film Festival that evening.  They were treated to five short films, with virtual journeys to Alaska Peninsula, Becharof, Yukon Flats, and Alaska Maritime refuges in Alaska and Noxubee Refuge in Mississippi.  The event also featured brand new wildlife images from Service photographer Steve Hillebrand from his recent trip to various Alaska refuges.

Every year National Wildlife Refuges around the nation celebrate the National Wildlife Refuge System in the second full week in October.  Events such as films, book reading, and lecture series highlight the national wildlife refuge system, the largest system of public lands in the world dedicated to wildlife conservation and people’s enjoyment of that wildlife.
