Restoration of the Former Loring Air Force Base continues on Aroostook NWR
Northeast Region, October 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Aroostook NWR maintenance staff and volunteers continue to restore the former Loring Air Force Base into wildlife habitat by removing buildings.  Over 54,000 square feet of weapons storage buildings in the 8900 area were removed.  The ground was leveled and over 50% of the area was planted with trees by the Loring Job Corps.  Additionally, Moosehorn NWR Fire Crew assisted the Aroostook NWR staff with restoring an the Old Willard School Access Road.  This improvement will save gas and significantly cut the travel time from one side of the refuge.  It will now take a quarter of the time to reach the other side than it use to.
