Journal Entry   Back Arizona Sensitive , Threatened, and Endangered Fish and Frog Wildland Fire Salvage Operations Southwest Region, September 30, 2005 Print Friendly Version Extensive wildland fire occurance in Arizona this past year resulted in threats to isolated populations of both native fish and frog species of concern in central and southern Arizona.  A number of cooperative efforts were implemented by the Arizona Ecological Services Field Office and Arizona Fisheries Resource Office with partnering agencies to protect populations of sensitive, threatened, and endangered fish and frog populations from advancing wildfires and subsequent ash-laden high flows resulting from summer thunderstorm runoff events. Collected fish and frogs were placed into holding facilities at the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery, Phoenix Zoo, and USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Lab at Flagstaff.  In other instances, fish were placed in proximal suitable habitat and/or held briefly until the threat had passed and they were repatriated to there original locales. These activities demonstrate the value and importance of proactive cooperative field recovery efforts to prevent loss of valuable native fish and frog populations.   Protocols for removal and for subsequent monitoring have been developed and adopted by the group of cooperating agencies to provide effective guidance in the future.  Contact Info: Martin Valdez, 505-248-6599, martin_valdez@fws.gov Send to: From: Notes: ..........................................................................................
