LANDMARK PAPER: Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map
Alaska Region, October 3, 2005
Print Friendly Version

An article, “The Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map”, describing the major vegetation units in the Arctic, their composition, and how they are distributed among major climatic subzones and countries, is newly published in the Journal of Vegetation Science 16: 267-282.  The map is the first vegetation map of an entire global biome at a comparable resolution.  The consistent treatment of the vegetation across the circumpolar Arctic, abundant ancillary material, and digital database should promote the application to numerous land-use, and climate-change applications and will make updating the map relatively easy.  Stephen Talbot, Division of Natural Resources, joined 12 other plant ecologists in publishing the article.
